Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Clawson
Opening statement…
"Obviously, really disappointed. I give all the credit to Army. I thought Coach Monken had all his guys ready to go. They got after us. They had a great plan. They executed their play-action plan. They had some big passes against us. We played really well defensively for really the first half and the second half we could not get off the field. They controlled the line of scrimmage. They got after us. Offensively, we had made improvements through the middle of the season and we're starting to regress. We're not making plays. Had a lot of opportunities but we turned the ball over. Again, on special teams we are not getting it done right now. Another kickoff return for a touchdown that's called back. The long punt return. The kickoff return game, twice we got the ball inside the twenty. We got outplayed. To have two weeks to get ready for a team and to play as poorly as we did, I'm really disappointed in myself that I did not have my team more ready to go. You get two weeks to get ready for a game, you have to play better than that. We didn't execute on so many different levels. It's a tough pill to swallow. But again credit to Army and their coaching staff and their players. We have to move on and get ready for Virginia next week."
On what Army did in the second half to take control of the game…
"We couldn't get off the blocks. They blocked us. They pushed us. I don't want to say it was anything different schematically. They were running the veer. They were running a lot of load options that they were blocking the pitch key and trying to have the quarterback keep it. But we just weren't getting off the blocks. They ran that toss play a number of times. They had a good crack block on the defensive end and they sealed the edge. We didn't crack and replace fast enough. We were calling defenses, knowing it was coming, and they're still getting four, five, six yards a clip. You can tell by my tone how disappointed I am."
On the bye being a disadvantage…
"You have a bye week before you play Army's offense, it should only be an advantage. You hate to only have one week to prepare for it. They outplayed us. They were better prepared. They out-executed us. They out-toughed us. They played smarter than us. They just beat us. They flat out beat us. If we had won that game, then we wouldn't have deserved it."
On John Wolford…
"He missed throws. He didn't look settled. I thought in the second quarter when we played fast, he settled down. And then late in the game he looked really unsettled again."
Army Head Coach Jeff Monken
On second half success… "There is a resiliency in these guys that has always been there. I did not expect us to fold. I knew we were going to fight, and that's what I'm most proud of. They came out in the second half and fought really hard. It didn't look good through three quarters. We were not taking advantage of opportunities in the first half. Our guys kept pushing, and our defense kept answering."
On Wake Forest…
"It was a great football game like the last two have been. I give credit to Dave Clawson. He's a terrific coach. They're (Wake Forest) really good on defense, and they have a lot of weapons on offense. It's a good football team we beat."
On building a specialized football program…
"The great thing about our kids, they realized a long time ago that it doesn't take a win like this to buy in. Every week they kept coming back and believed it was going to make a difference to be rewarded. They've played the whole season this year like that."
Wake Forest redshirt freshman safety Jessie Bates
On how this loss happened…
"I mean we knew going in that there is a small margin for error and if there's one explosive play then that could be the game. The big plays ended up being touchdowns."
On the message in the locker room after the game…
"Just keep working. I feel like we got kind of lazy throughout the week. It's just the bye week. We practice and we practice and practice and I just feel like some people got kind of bored with it. That showed up tonight."
Wake Forest junior quarterback John Wolford
On how this game slipped away…
"I thought we missed some opportunities out there. I thought we were moving the ball consistently, we missed a couple points, there were the turnovers and that play Scotty wishes he could get back. Overall we did not play well enough on offense, myself included. I continue to turn the ball over and I can't do that."
On his play…
"There was bad communication out there. I saw the field well, I felt healthy and at the end of the day I have to execute better."
