Wake Forest Opens 2016-17 Season Against Navy
• Entering the fifth season under head coach Jen Hoover, Wake Forest is set to open the 2016-17 season on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. inside LJVM Coliseum against Navy.
• In home openers under Hoover, Wake Forest is a perfect 4-0 with victories over Coppin State in 2012, Campbell in 2013, Longwood in 2014 and LSU in 2015. The Demon Deacons are 3-1 in season openers with the lone loss coming in 2013 when the Deacs traveled to Marquette to open the season and fell 90-71.
Wake Forest Storylines
• Wake Forest was picked to finish 11th in the ACC preseason poll by both the Blue Ribbon Panel and the league's head coaches.
• A season ago, the Demon Deacons were picked 14th in the conference and ended up finishing tied for ninth at season's end. Throughout the campaign, Wake Forest went 17-16 while posting a 6-10 record against ACC opponents.
• Making an appearance in the WNIT, Wake Forest broke a stretch of three-straight seasons without a trip to the postseason. Wake Forest went to the WNIT in 2012 but had not been in a postseason tournament under Hoover until last season. In the tournament, Wake Forest took down Charlotte 72-69 on the road before falling to tournament runner-up Florida Gulf Coast in Ft. Myers, 67-48.
Scouting the Mids
• A season ago, Navy posted an even 15-15 record while going 9-9 in Patriot League play. While going 11-5 at home, the Mids struggled to a 4-10 record away from their home building.
• Sarita Condie led the Mids with 10.7 points per game, but was the only player to average double figures on the season. Navy does return its top three scorers, though, in Condie, Taylor Dunham (9.5 ppg) and Ashanti Kennedy (8.0 ppg).
Season-Opening Success
• Since 1980, Wake Forest holds a stellar 30-6 record in season openers and has lost just once since 2006 to start a season.
• The Demon Deacons have also won 14 of the last 16 games to open a season dating back to the 2000-01 campaign.
• At home since 1980, the Deacs are 13-3 in season openers, which includes an 11-3 mark inside LJVM Coliseum.
Next Time Out
• While Wake Forest plays four of its first five games of the season at LJVM Coliseum, the Demon Deacons will next travel to LSU for a 7 p.m. ET tip against the Tigers at Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The game will air on SEC Network +.
• Last season, the Deacs earned a 60-57 victory at home over LSU in the season opener on Nov. 13. Ariel Stephenson scored 21 points in her first collegiate game and fellow freshman Kortni Simmons notched 15 points on the afternoon.
