WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Five players scored in double figures and the Demon Deacons connected from deep early and often as Wake Forest defeated Bucknell, 94-74, Sunday inside the LJVM Coliseum.
The Deacs (2-0) shot 50 percent (13-26) from beyond the arc, and their 13 made three pointers are tied for 8th-most in single-game program history.
Redshirt sophomore Keyshawn Woods scored in double figures for the second time in as many games as he scored a career-high 22 points off the bench to lead all scorers. Woods was 8-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range.
John Collins topped his career-high of 18 points with 19 Sunday afternoon while adding a game-high nine rebounds. Mitchell Wilbekin added 13 points thanks to 3-of-4 shooting from long range.
After spotting the Bison (1-1) to an early 3-0 lead, the Demon Deacons used an 18-2 run over 4:44 to build an 18-5 margin that the team would not relinquish. Four different Deacs connected on a total of five three pointers during the run, and the team would hit a total of seven from long range during the first half.
Bucknell trimmed the Wake Forest lead down to five midway through the first half, but the Demon Deacons scored 11 of the final 14 points to take a 47-33 advantage into the intermission.
Out of the break, the Bison were only able to get within nine of the Demon Deacons, and Wake Forest led by double figures for the final 15:40 of action to close out the victory.
Konstantinos Mitoglou added 11 points and seven rebounds while Austin Arians contributed 10 points in the winning effort. Bryant Crawford had eight assists to no turnovers Sunday afternoon
DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE
Sophomore Doral Moore led the Demon Deacon defense in blocks with three. Moore's three blocks tie his career high.
In the first half the Deacs defense kept Bucknell to a Field-Goal percentage of 35.3% (12-34).
The Deacs outrebounded the Bison 40-32.
CAREER DAY FOR COLLINS
Sophomore John Collins finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. This is the second-consecutive game that Collins has scored in double digits. En route to Collins' 19 points, 11 of them came from free throws. The 11 free throws made is a new career high for Collins.
Collins' 19 points are also a career high for the sophomore.
DOUBLE DIGIT DEACS
Graduate transfer Austin Arians ended the afternoon with double-digit points with 10.
Juniors Dinos Mitoglou and Mitchell Wilbekin ended the contest with 11 and 13 points respectively. The 13 points from Wilbekin are a new season high.
Transfer Keyshawn Woods led the Deacs in scoring with a total of 22 points. The 22 points are also a new career high for Woods. Woods went 8-9 (88.9%) from the field.
DEACS FROM DOWNTOWN
In today's contest against Bucknell the Demon Deacons ended the afternoon with a 3-point percentage of 50 percent (13-26).
Four Deacs contributed to the 3-pointer frenzy against Bucknell. Woods contributed five 3-pointers from six attempts. Wilbekin and Arians were responsible for three 3-pointers each. Mitoglou contributed with two 3-pointers.
UP NEXT
The Demon Deacons will travel to Charleston, S.C. for next week's Gildan Charleston Classic.
The tournament will feature games Thursday, Friday, and Sunday at the TD Arena on the campus of the College of Charleston.
Wake Forest will open the tournament Thursday against UTEP at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN3.
