GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Three members of the Wake Forest men's soccer team were named to the All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team on Tuesday morning, announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
Junior midfielders Ian Harkes and Jacori Hayes were both honored for the third-straight year while freshman midfielder Brad Dunwell was also recognized. Harkes and Hayes were two of eight players to have earned the honor for the third time in their careers. North Carolina's Jonathan Campbell, named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, finishes his career as the only player on the team to have made the list all four years.
Harkes played a key role in Wake Forest's midfield in 2015. Scoring one goal and tallying four assists on the offensive end, the junior helped Wake Forest post 12 shutouts that included a five-game shutout streak to tie the program record for the longest all time. Harkes also helped Wake Forest put together a 543-minute scoreless streak from Oct. 2 through Oct. 23 -- the second longest in program history -- while assisting with the team's 0.58 goals against average, also the second-best mark in program history. Four of Harkes' six points on the year came in the NCAA Tournament, as he assisted on both game-winning goals in the Second Round and Sweet 16 wins before scoring the Deacs' lone goal in the Elite Eight loss to eventual national champion Stanford.
Hayes had a career year for the Demon Deacons in 2015, notching five goals -- all game winners -- while assisting on five more. His game-winners this season came in big moments, leading the Deacs past Santa Clara in the season-opener, South Carolina and North Carolina before adding the game-winners in the regular-season finale and the ACC Quarterfinal matchups against Louisville, the latter coming in overtime.
In his first season at Wake Forest, Dunwell stepped onto the scene in a big way by starting all 22 of the team's games. Dunwell made a splash early in his career by tallying three assists in his first four games and ultimately finished with a goal and five assists. Overall, the freshman was named to the ACC's All-Freshman Team and finished the season ranked No. 29 on Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Freshmen in the Nation list.
Both Harkes and Hayes were named First Team All-ACC and NSCAA All-South Region Second Team honorees in 2015. Hayes also was rewarded with a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District III team and the NSCAA Scholar All-South Region squad.
Harkes is a Business & Enterprise Management major while Hayes is majoring in Physics. Dunwell is undecided on his major.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team. The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
Wake Forest will embark on a trip to Spain in March that will allow the team a crash course education in Spanish history and the ability to take part in numerous educational tours in Barcelona and Madrid before playing in at least two matches and watching multiple professional soccer games and training sessions. After the trip, the Deacs will return to competition with their spring schedule, which will be released later this month.
