GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Wake Forest women's basketball freshman Ariel Stephenson has been selected to the ACC All-Freshman Team, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. The team was compiled through voting by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Stephenson is Wake Forest's first freshman to make the team since the 2010 season when Sandra Garcia was named to the squad. Overall, the Prince George, Virginia, native is Wake Forest's 11th player in program history named to the ACC All-Freshman Team.
During her first season with the Demon Deacons, Stephenson is averaging 12.3 points per game and leads the Deacs with 20 games scoring in double-figures thus far. Twice named ACC Rookie of the Week, Stephenson earned the first ACC weekly honor of the season after setting her then-career-high with 21 points in the season opener against LSU. She was again named the league's Rookie of the Week on Feb. 8 after leading the Deacs to victories over Pittsburgh and NC State. During the game against the Wolfpack, Stephenson notched a career-high 22 points to help the Deacs avenge a Jan. 3 loss to the Wolfpack in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Starting each of the last eight games, Stephenson has scored in double figures in nine of Wake Forest's last 11 contests overall. Eleven of her 20 double-figure scoring games this season have come in ACC play.
Stephenson and the 10th-seeded Demon Deacons open their ACC Tournament run on Wednesday, March 2, at 3:30 p.m. against No. 15 seed Clemson inside the Greensboro Coliseum. Fans can purchase tickets to the game by clicking here. Should Wake Forest top Clemson, the Deacs would move on to take on seventh-seeded Georgia Tech. Wake Forest is the only ACC team to have won at least one game in the conference tournament each of the last seven years.
