
Deacs to Play UTEP in Charleston Classic Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Wake Forest will play UTEP in the first round of the 2016 Gildan Charleston Classic on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the TD Arena in downtown Charleston, S.C. The tournament bracket was announced Thursday (July 14).
The Wake Forest-UTEP game is the second of four games on the opening day of the tournament and will tip off at 1:30 p.m. ET and air on ESPN3. The three-day tournament continues on Friday, Nov. 18, and concludes on Sunday, Nov. 20.
The game will be the third all-time meeting between the Demon Deacons and Miners, with each team winning one previous matchup. At the 1984 Sun Bowl Classic in El Paso, Wake Forest lost to host UTEP, 90-75. The Deacs' victory came at the 2008 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif., where they downed the Miners, 82-79, in the semifinals.
The winner of the Wake Forest-UTEP game will play the winner of an opening round game between reigning NCAA Champion Villanova and Western Michigan in the tournament semifinals on Nov. 18.
Other opening round games are Mississippi State vs. UCF and tournament host College of Charleston vs. Boise State.
