WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Ema Twumasi's first collegiate goal with 1.9 seconds left in the first half pushed No. 5 Wake Forest men's soccer past Cal Poly 2-1 on Sunday night at Spry Stadium.

With the clock winding down on the first half, Wake Forest earned a corner kick after moving the ball into the attacking third. Bruno Lapa quickly took the corner kick from the left side of goal and sent a ball right at goal that bounced off a Cal Poly body and back to Twumasi. The freshman settled the ball with his chest and facing away from goal, turned and fired a bicycle kick attempt that beat the keeper to give the Deacs the lead and ultimately the victory.

The win moved the Deacs to 1-1 on the young season while Cal Poly dropped to 0-2 with the defeat.

For the second game in a row, the Deacs conceded the first goal in the first 15 minutes as Justin Dhillon notched his first of the season. The Demon Deacons responded just eight minutes later when Jacori Hayes scored from the top of the box to knot the game.

Midway through the first half, Twumasi almost notched his first goal in the 31st minute. Hayes put a shot on goal but his attempt was stopped by the keeper. Twumasi followed as the rebounded squirted loose but Twumasi was called offsides by the linesman after putting his attempt away.

Overall, Wake Forest outshot Cal Poly 16-12, but Cal Poly put the pressure on late in looking for the equalizer. The Mustangs almost notched the tying goal late but Andreu Cases Mundet and the Demon Deacon defense came up with the stop. Cases Mundet made two stops in the game on the way to the victory.

Wake Forest returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3, for the third game of the six-game homestand to open the season when it hosts Cleveland State at Spry Stadium. First kick is set for 7 p.m. with the game airing on ACC Network Extra.
