DURHAM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team started the 2016-17 season with a dominant victory at the Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke University Golf Course. The Demon Deacons finished the three-round event at 23-under, finishing 11 strokes ahead of runner-up Liberty.

The win marked the second straight year that the Deacs opened the season with a victory at the Rod Myers Invitational. This year's victory marks the first time Wake Forest has won an event in consecutive years since the General Hacker Championship in 2008 and 2009.

"The football team set the tone for a great weekend in Durham for the Deacs," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We played a solid final round to be able to throw out a 73. To have four guys in the top 10 of the first tournament of the year is a great start for our team."

Wake Forest's total of 841 shattered the previous scoring record at the Rod Myers Invitational of 851 (13-under), set by 2010 champion Iowa.

The Demon Deacons were led by four players that finished in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard, including three in the top five. Will Zalatoris shot a final round 70 to finish T-2nd at 9-under for the tournament. Paul McBride was fourth, shooting even par 72 on Sunday to finish at 6-under. Eric Bae finished fifth in his collegiate debut, shooting a team-low 69 on Sunday to finish the event at 5-under.

Cameron Young shot 1-over 73 during the final round to finish the tournament at 1-under, which tied him for 10th. Kyle Sterbinsky finished the event at 6-over after shooting even par 72 during the final round.

The Demon Deacons will return to action Sept. 26-27 as they host the Primland Collegiate Invitational at the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Va.
