Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Clawson
Opening statement:
"We never make it easy, but it's a good win. For the most part we dominated play. Whenever you have close to 500 yards of offense and hold the other team to under 100 you've got to be happy with the overall physicality of the game. However, I'm really disappointed in the two turnovers. That really allowed it to be a more competitive game. We had those two turnovers inside of the 20 and that led to two touchdowns and late in the game we tried to rest our runs a little bit, play our second defense there and they started going right down the field. Then we had all these pass interference penalties and gave another score, so again, I'm proud of our team-- it was a good win, certainly good to be 3-0, but as with all wins, there's a lot of things we need to work on and we need to get better and the plan is to just start doing that tomorrow.
On the defense setting the tone early:
"They were running there, pin and pull stuff, and we were getting penetration and making hits in the backfield You know, 2nd & 12 and 3rd & 14 are nice downs to play on defense, so I thought the front setting the tone by getting penetration allowed the backers to scrape and make runs through and make plays. Then we got them in 3rd down. It becomes a competitive game though when you turn the ball over. By nature, you're always going to find the things to critique, but you're close to 500 yards, you limit a team to under 100, but you know to me those turnovers allowed them to get back in the game. We can't do that. We've been good at not turning the ball over but today we lost the turnover margin by two, which is why it was a competitive game for as long as it was."
Delaware Head Coach Dave Brock
On coming up short against Wake Forest:
"I thought the kids battled. They (Wake Forest) played hard. We were able to get the ball in the end zone again, and get a couple stops. We were a little overmatched there. They're a very good defensive football team. They whipped us up front in the first half when we weren't able to do much. I thought the kids battled."
On upcoming conference games:
"We have a week off, which we'll need. Then we have an eight-game conference season which we can't wait to play. We have two weeks until James Madison, conference opener on the road, we'll be ready to rock-and-roll when we get to Harrisonburg."
On defensive unit:
"I know what our defensive unit is. They're going to battle. We have great kids, really good players. They battled their tails off. We left them (Wake Forest) out there too long offensively and missed too many tackles. They run a good scheme. We had a couple of assignment busts that led to third down conversions and a couple long runs. You can't allow that to happen. We're going back to the drawing board, and have a great opportunity to get better this off week."
On the low-yardage offense:
"It was not good enough. We didn't do very much, which is frustrating. We threw some good balls and they got dropped. It doesn't matter who throws the ball if you don't catch it. We have to fix that situation. We have to get the run game back. This is really the first time in a long time that we have been handled up front. We'll go back to the drawing board and get ready to go this off week. We're going to have a great week of preparation for James Madison."
Wake Forest junior quarterback John Wolford
On being mentally ready to play:
"I thought I started off shaky, which I was not happy with. I missed some easy throws. I was reading the stats and it said I was 2-for-9 for 22 yards, which is awful, but I was able to settle in. I got in the rhythm in the second half. We ran the ball so well. It wasn't very difficult, for me, to hand the ball off and watch Matt (Colburn) run. He made some big runs. So that makes my job a lot easier. "
On not starting today:
"Well I think you just have to realize it's a team. No matter how my feelings are, it's about this team. It's about these guys who have been here for four years and worked their butts off. I could feel sorry for myself, but it's my job to prepare every game like I'm a starter. I just want this team to win. That's all I care about and I'm happy where ever I'm able to do that."
Wake Forest sophomore running back Matt Colburn
On starting tonight:
"It's such a great feeling. Ever since last year, even this year, that's what we work on in practice. We work to be ready. When one guy goes down, then next guy has to be ready to step up to the plate. Just so happened that's how it was for me tonight. I took everything, the opportunities, and made the most that I could."
On advice from Cade Carney:
"He was right there in my corner the whole game. He was making sure I was protecting the football, making sure I was on my assignments, looking at my progression. We're all brothers. Blood couldn't make us any closer. We're always there for each other, always making each other better. We are trying to be the best group on the field."
Wake Forest redshirt junior linebacker Grant Dawson
On Being 3-0: "Being 3-0 is feels great. Beating Duke was great. I think we did a great job last week. We enjoyed the win. We watched the film and felt good about ourselves, but come Monday we picked up our scouting reports for Delaware. I think we did a good job switching to the next week. We wanted to be 1-0 this week. That's our goal every week. I think we did a pretty good job cleaning the slate, going week by week."
