Deacs Aim For Program-Best Sixth-Straight Shutout Against FIU
Wake Forest goes for a program-record sixth-straight shutout on Tuesday night when it hosts Florida International at Spry Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ACC Network Extra.
All-time, Wake Forest holds a 3-1-0 series advantage against the Panthers with wins in each of the last three meetings, including a 3-2 victory at Spry Stadium last year on Aug. 30.
Last Time Out
Scoring twice in the first half, Wake Forest jumped out to a quick lead on Duke on the road in Durham and held off the Blue Devil attack throughout the second half to win 2-0 in its first road game of the season.
Making his first-career start, freshman Ema Twumasi scored the game-winner in the 19th minute when he did a 360 in the box to beat his defender and took a left-footed shot that beat the keeper inside the right post.
Six minutes later, Jon Bakero netted his first goal of the season when he took a pass from Jacori Hayes and put a rocket of a shot inside the right post to put the Deacs up 2-0. The goal is his first since scoring last November against Charlotte in the NCAA Tournament.
Alec Ferrell started his second-straight game in goal and made four saves for the shutout. Kevin Politz made a quick-reaction save in the 85th minute when he stopped a heavy shot by Duke's Ryan Thompson ticketed for goal after it beat Ferrell to the right side of goal.
For the first time this season, Wake Forest was outshot in a game when Duke finished with a slight 13-12 advantage. The Deacs only took two shots in the second half while Duke fired 10 in the frame.
Scouting the Panthers
Out of Conference USA, Florida International comes in with a 3-2-1 record and is coming off a home 2-1 win over Kentucky.
Two goals in the first 12:29 of action was all it took for FIU to top the Wildcats in Miami on Saturday. Kentucky scored in the 48th minute to cut the lead in half, but FIU held on for the win. The two goals doubled the total Kentucky had allowed on the season through five previous games.
Santiago Patino leads the Panthers with seven goals in six games on the season. The rest of the team has combined to score just two goals thus far this year.
Last season, FIU scored in the 10th minute against Wake Forest but Michael Gamble and Kevin Politz each tallied to bring a 2-1 lead into halftime. Out of the break, Jack Harrison scored his first-career goal for the Deacs.
Can't Lose If They Don't Score
Through seven games, Wake Forest has allowed just two goals. The Demon Deacons have now posted five shutouts in a row against Cleveland State, Appalachian State, Virginia, George Washington and Duke.
Currently, Wake Forest is on a shutout streak of 548:28 since it last gave up a goal against Cal Poly. The streak is the third streak of 300-plus minutes and second of 500-plus minutes since head coach Bobby Muuss took over prior to 2015. The current streak is the third-best in program history. Last year, Wake Forest went 562:29 without allowing a goal from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23. The program record was set in 1992 when the Deacs went 639:59 between goals.
Also since the start of 2015, Wake Forest has only allowed three teams to score more than once in a game (Florida International (8/30/15), Louisville (10/30/15) and Stanford (12/3/15)).
Overall, the Deacs have allowed just 15 goals since the start of 2015. That number is tied for the fourth-fewest in the nation since the start of that season. Only Loyola Chicago (10), Denver (12), and Western Michigan (14) have allowed fewer. Just two teams have allowed less than two goals thus far in 2016 and Charlotte is the only team yet to be scored on this year. Last time Charlotte was scored on came when Jon Bakero scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute of the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Nov. 22.
Looking Ahead
Wake Forest will play its last game at home until Oct. 11 on Saturday, Sept. 24, when it battles ACC foe NC State at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
