Wake Forest Looks For Second Win Against Cleveland State
Wake Forest is set to welcome a tough Cleveland State team to Spry Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3. First kick is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be aired on ACC Network Extra with Ty Collins on the call.
The game is the third of a six-match stretch at home in which Wake Forest previously welcomed Saint Louis and Cal Poly and will welcome Appalachian State, Virginia and George Washington in the coming days.
Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons conceded a goal early in the first half, but Wake Forest battled back to take down Cal Poly on Sunday, Aug. 28, for its first win of the year.
After Justin Dhillon got the Mustangs on the board in the 12th minute, Steven Echevarria fired a ball from the top of the box that was intended for Jacori Hayes. Echevarria's attempt glanced off of Cal Poly defender and into goal to knot the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute.
With time winding down on the first half, Wake Forest earned a corner kick and Bruno Lapa played the set piece in from the left side of goal. The ball found the head of Sam Raben, who knocked it across the mouth of goal to Ema Twumasi. The freshman settled the ball with his chest and lined up a bicycle kick, which he sent past the keeper and into the goal with 1.9 seconds to go in the half. The goal ended up being the game-winner and was featured on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays at No. 5 later that night.
Over the course of the first two games, Wake Forest outshot its opponent 44 to 17, taking 28 shots against Saint Louis on Opening Night.
Scouting the Vikings
Cleveland State defeated defending Atlantic 10 champion Dayton in the season opener last Friday by the score of 3-0 as freshman Lawrence Karpeh notched a pair of goals to seal the game.
Later in the weekend, CSU scored four second-half goals to rally from a 2-0 deficit against Robert Morris on Sunday to claim a 4-2 win. Rookie forward Gabriel Pewu scored the tying and go-ahead goals against Robert Morris.
The seven goals puts Cleveland State in a tie for third nationally for most goals already this season. Buffalo has scored 10 goals to date while ACC rival Syracuse has eight. The Vikings are tied with Bowling Green and Liberty at seven goals.

Looking Ahead
Wake Forest will continue its homestand on Tuesday night, Sept. 6, when it welcomes Appalachian State to Spry Stadium.

Through the years, Wake Forest has battled Appalachian State 21 times with the Demon Deacons coming up with a 19-2-0 record against the Mountaineers thus far.
The last meeting between the two teams came in 2012, when Wake Forest beat ASU 4-0 at home.
