Bates Named ACC 'Defensive Back of the Week'

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest safety Jessie Bates III has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference's 'Defensive Back of the Week'.
Bates, a 6-2, 200-pound redshirt freshman from Fort Wayne, Ind. (Snider), played his first college football game in his home state of Indiana and did not disappoint. Bates had two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown in the Demon Deacons' 33-28 win over Indiana. Bates totaled 94 yards in returns including a 55-yard return for a score.
Bates led the team with eight tackles, returned two punts for a total of two yards, and recovered Indiana's final onside kick with 11 seconds remaining in the game.
In the first quarter with Wake Forest trailing 7-0, Bates intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 39 yards leading to a Deacon touchdown to tie the game. With the game tied at 7 in the second quarter, Bates intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to give the Deacons a 14-7 lead.
