DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Eighth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer saw its program-record shutout streak come to an end Tuesday night but continued its winning ways with a 2-1 road victory at Davidson.
The win moves the Demon Deacons to 8-1-1 on the year while Davidson falls to 1-7-0 with the defeat.
"I'm extremely happy to go on the road, get a bunch of our players valuable experience and get the win while maintaining our health," said Wake Forest head coach Bobby Muuss. "We all would have liked another goal but it was a great team win. We will certainly learn from the match and now we move forward and prepare for an extremely talented Clemson team on Friday night."
Jacori Hayes turned in a three-point night with a goal and an assist, marking the third time in his career he's notched three points in a game - a career best. He broke the scoreless tie in the 68th minute when he buried a shot from 20 yards out into the bottom right corner of goal. The tally marked his team-leading third of the season. His goal stood to be his eighth game-winner in a row, but Davidson scored in the 88th minute on a goal by Cort Coxhead, his first of the year.
Hank Gauger scored what turned out to be the game-winning strike in the 75th minute. Coming off the bench in the 73rd minute to replace Hayden Partain, Gauger scored 1:45 after stepping on the field when he took a chip pass from Hayes and beat the keeper one-on-one for his first goal since 2014.
Looking to extend the program record shutout streak to eight games, the streak was 2:42 away from extending before Coxhead ended hopes at the clean sheet. The goal also snapped Wake Forest's record for consecutive shutout minutes at 855:46, which evens out to 14 hours, 15 minutes and 46 seconds of game action. The previous record for most shutout minutes in a row stood at 639:59 of game action, which was set in 1992. Prior to Tuesday night, Cal Poly was the last team to score on the Demon Deacons on Aug. 28 when Justin Dhillon notched a goal in the 12th minute.
Entering Tuesday, Wake Forest was one of three teams in the country to have allowed a national-best two goals. The Deacs were tied with West Virginia and Loyola Chicago. West Virginia had the night off Tuesday while Loyola Chicago allowed three goals to Creighton.
"Of course we didn't want to concede and when and how we did," Muuss said of Davidson's goal. "It does sting a little bit, but the most important thing is we learn from this and take another step forward with starting another scoreless run later this week."
Alec Ferrell made one save in the contest to bring his season total to 20 across five games in goal. The Davidson goal marked the first against him this season.
Wake Forest will be back in action Friday night, Sept. 30, looking to move to 4-0 in ACC play on the year when it visits No. 5 Clemson. First kick is set for 7 p.m. in South Carolina with the game airing on ACC Network Extra.
