GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest men's soccer goalkeeper Alec Ferrell was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon by the league office after helping Wake Forest to a 2-0 week with two clean sheets.
Ferrell posted nine saves on the week as the Demon Deacons earned a 2-0 victory over Florida International on Sept. 20 and a 1-0 victory over NC State to move to 3-0 in ACC action. The honor marks the third over the course of the last two seasons for Ferrell, but this marks his first ACC award of 2016.
Against NC State, the redshirt-senior captain made an acrobatic save in the 54th minute when he stopped a shot from point-blank range by Lukas Zarges to keep Wake Forest ahead 1-0. In four games thus far this season, Ferrell has made 19 saves and has yet to concede a goal.
Heading into Tuesday's game against Davidson, Wake Forest is currently on a program-record streak of 728:28 minutes since last allowing a goal. Last time a team scored against the Deacs came Aug. 28 against Cal Poly. Along the way, Wake Forest broke the program record for most consecutive shutouts, which now stands at seven.
The Deacs are in action Tuesday night at Davidson. First kick is set for 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium and the game will be broadcast on the A-10 Network. The match is the first of three in a row away from Spry Stadium with Wake Forest going to Clemson on Sept. 30 and Notre Dame on Oct. 8.
