WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's soccer, ranked No. 21 in the country, used a complete team performance Tuesday night at Spry Stadium to dispatch Appalachian State 3-0 in the last nonconference game before the team's first ACC game.

Behind a PK goal from Ian Harkes and two from Tane Gent, Wake Forest improved to 3-1 on the young season and won its third-straight game after dropping the season opener. Appalachian State dropped to 0-3 on the year with the loss.

After dominating the first 30 minutes without being able to find the back of the net, Harkes and the Demon Deacons broke through when the senior midfielder buried a chance from the penalty spot in the 38th minute. The chance was drawn when Luis Argudo took the ball into the penalty area and was taken down just after entering the box. Harkes stepped up and notched his first goal of 2016 to put the Deacs ahead 1-0.

Late in the contest, Gent notched two goals to give the Deacs the insurance it was looking for to seal the victory. His first goal came in the 85th minute on a nice finish from short range that went upper 90 after he was fed by Ema Twumasi. With 11.3 seconds to go, Gent doubled his tally with a goal off a cross from Steven Echevarria to make it 3-0. The pair of goals marks the first multi-goal game for Gent. The tallies were the 11th and 12th of his career after scoring a career-best six last season.

Prior to Harkes' first-half tally, Echevarria had a goal called back due to a foul that would've put the Deacs up in the 18th minute. Brad Dunwell fired a shot from range that knuckled in on the Appalachian State goalkeeper as he mishandled the shot. The ball bounced straight in front of his to a charging Hayden Partain, but Partain's chance was stopped by Jake Chasteen. On the rebound, play was blown dead just before Echevarria could control the ball and put it into the back of the net, as his second goal of the season was waived off by the official.

Appalachian State could only muster two shots in the game to Wake Forest's 23 with the first coming in the 75th minute. Wake Forest won eight corner kicks on the night while Appalachian State earned four.

Between the pipes, Grant Bishop made his first-career start and picked up the shutout. He was not forced to make a save in the contest. On the other side, Chasteen made six saves but allowed the three goals after coming up big early in the game to keep the Mountaineers within striking distance.

Wake Forest returns to action Saturday, Sept. 10, for its first ACC game of the 2016 season when it hosts No. 13 Virginia. First kick at Spry Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. No. 13 UVA is 2-0-1 on the season with wins over Coastal Carolina and James Madison to go with a tie against Xavier.
