RALEIGH, N.C. - Wake Forest snapped a 25-game ACC road losing streak dating back to the 2013-14 season after defeating NC State 93-88 at PNC Arena Saturday afternoon.
The victory brings the Demon Deacons' win total to three in the ACC and 12 overall, eclipsing last year's final win totals. It is also the first victory for the Deacs in Raleigh since the 2004-05 season.
The 93 points marks only the third time since 1968-69 that the Deacs have scored 93 or more points in consecutive ACC games. The others were Jan. 27 and 29, 2005 against Georgia Tech and Miami and Feb 10 and 13, 1993 against Florida State and Duke.
John Collins led the Demon Deacons (12-7, 3-4 ACC) and all scorers with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting and an ACC-career high nine rebounds.
Keyshawn Woods totaled 18 points while Bryant Crawford added 14. Mitchell Wilbekin and Konstantinos Mitoglou added 12 and 10, respectively, to round out the double figure scorers.
Mitoglou also pulled down eight rebounds for the Demon Deacons while Crawford added six assists.
The Deacs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to a jumper from Collins and a triple from Crawford. However, NC State (13-7, 2-5 ACC) came back to tie the game and take the lead after a 9-0 run. The Wolfpack led for over six minutes until a layup from Brandon Childress gave the Deacs a 22-21 lead. From there, it was a back-and-forth battle. A triple from Childress at the 4:52 mark gave Wake Forest a three-point lead. The Deacs held the lead until a layup from NC State's Markell Johnson tied it up with a minute to go. A free throw from Torin Dorn would give the Wolfpack a one-point lead heading in to the locker room, 44-43.
Wake Forest began the second half on a 7-0 run and built the advantage to 8 at the 13:31 mark. However, NC State didn't back down. After the under-12 media break, the Wolfpack went on an 8-0 run to bring the score within one and force a Demon Deacon time out. The Deacs came off the break on fire, going on a 9-0 run to bring their lead to 10, the largest of the night, with just under six minutes remaining. NC State would try to mount a comeback and managed to get the score within two with 17 second remaining. The Wolfpack held the Deacs without a field goal for the final five minutes of competition, however, the Deacs went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line to secure the 93-88 victory.
Wake Forest shot 88 percent from the free throw line (29-for-33), its third-best percentage of the season.
The Demon Deacons finish their two-game road trip Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Syracuse. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
