WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest senior midfielder Ian Harkes is up for the MAC Hermann Trophy, presented tonight. Full details are below.
WHAT: The Missouri Athletic Club will present the Hermann Trophy to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the nation. The crystal soccer ball trophy represents the highest individual achievement in the sport. Many of the biggest names in American soccer, including Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Claudio Reyna and Alexi Lalas, have won the award.
WHO: Ian Harkes represents Wake Forest as one of three finalists on the men's side. He is joined by Florida Gulf Coast's Albert Ruiz and Maryland's Gordon Wild. Finalists on the women's side include USC's Morgan Andrews, West Virginia's Kadeisha Buchanan and Stanford's Andi Sullivan.
WHEN: The award will be presented tonight, Jan. 6, at 7:15 p.m. ET.
WHERE: This year's Hermann Trophy will be presented at a press conference in St. Louis.
WHY: The four-year starter served as an anchor of the midfield for his entire career. He made 82 career starts, finishing with nine goals and 18 assists, and four of his five goals this season were game-winners. During his senior campaign, Harkes was named ACC Midfielder of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP and NCAA Tournament Offensive Most Outstanding Player. It marks the first time in the ACC's illustrious soccer history a player has earned all three awards in the same season, as he led the Demon Deacons to a national runner-up finish.
