The Matchup
No. 2-ranked Wake Forest returns to ACC play this weekend, taking on Virginia Tech on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
The Demon Deacons are also holding their annual Genna Wiley Memorial Match and will wear pink jerseys to raise money for Susan G. Komen. Genna was the wife of former athletic trainer Steve Wiley, and passed away less than a week after the Deacs won the 2007 national title following a three-year fight with breast cancer.
Last Time Out
The Deacs recorded their biggest offensive output since an 8-2 win over Virginia Tech in 2008, scoring eight times in a victory over Longwood on Tuesday.
Seven different Deacons scored, including Michael DeShields and Justin McMaster scoring for the first time in their careers. Jon Bakero notched two goals and an assist, while Luis Argudo totaled three assists.
Wake Forest Storylines
The Demon Deacons have one of the most prolific offenses in the nation to date this season. Wake Forest is atop the nation with 41 goals, also leading the country with 130 points, 48 assists, 8.31 shots on goal per game and 7.77 corners per game.
Last year, the Deacs finished with 36 goals scored in 25 games. Wake Forest has surpassed that total in 13 games this year.
Five Demon Deacons have already totaled at least 10 points after four did so all last year: Jon Bakero (30 pts - 9g, 12a), Luis Argudo (19 pts - 7g, 5a), Ema Twumsai (16 pts - 7g, 2a), Brandon Servania (12 pts - 2g, 8a) and Steven Echevarria (10 pts - 4g, 2a). Bakero leads the nation in points and assists, ranking sixth in goals.
Bakero was picked as one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. Jacori Hayes won the national honor in 2016.
Wake Forest has been without Servania and Mark McKenzie, who are with the U.S. U-18 Men's National Team in Spain for a pair of friendlies against Belgium and Russia.
Opponent And Series History
Wake Forest leads the series against Virginia Tech, 17-3-2, winning the last meeting in the NCAA Quarterfinal last year.
Before that, the teams hadn't met since the 2014 regular season, a 2-0 Hokie win in Blacksburg. That loss snapped a 14-game unbeaten streak for the Deacs, who went 13-0-1 from 1998-2013.
The Hokies are 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. They've won five of their last six, including an upset over then-No. 1 Notre Dame.
On Deck
Wake Forest hits the road for back-to-back games at Elon (Oct. 17) and Boston College (Oct. 21).
