ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- The Wake Forest men's golf team returned to action Friday with the first round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. The Demon Deacons shot a 6-under 282 during the opening round to finish the day tied for third place at the elite event that features four of the top five teams in the nation.
Wake Forest was led by Will Zalatoris and Marco Steyn during Friday's play with both ending the round in the top 15. Zalatoris is T-6th at 4-under after an opening round 68. Steyn shot his low-round of his freshman season with a 3-under 69, ending the day T-12th.
Cameron Young eagled the final hole to finish an even-par round of 72. Paul McBride rounded out the scoring four for the Deacs with a 1-under 73, one stroke ahead of Eric Bae, who posted a 74.
The No. 11 Demon Deacons are five shots off the lead, set by third-ranked Oklahoma State at 11-under. Texas is in second at 9-under, while the Deacs are tied for third at 6-under with UCLA and Duke.
"It was a wonderful start and we were playing beautiful," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The two par-3s on the backside were our downfall today. Will had another solid day and Marco had his low-round as a Deacon. Cameron made eagle on the last, which always makes us happy. The greens should be good tomorrow and the weather looks awesome, so we need to be ready to play."
The Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate continues Saturday and concludes Sunday.
