PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii – The fifth-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team began play at its final event of the fall with Sunday's first round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The Demon Deacons shot 7-under during the first round at the Makai Golf Club and are in seventh place.

Louisville is the first-round leader after shooting 22-under. Missouri is in second at 18-under, followed by San Diego State (14-under), UCLA (9-under), Washington and Sam Houston State (8-under) and the Demon Deacons.

"The scores were very good early on," said head coach Jerry Haas. "I believe we had it 13-under par at one time and let it get away. Hopefully that will be our high round of the week. We are capable of shooting a good score over the last two rounds and get back into contention."

Marco Steyn and Lee Detmer each shot a 3-under round of 69 to pace the Demon Deacons in the first round. Cameron Young, who won the event in 2015, shot a 1-under 71, while Eric Bae had an even par 72. The low round of the day for Wake Forest was by freshman Parker Gillam, who shot a career-best 6-under 66 while playing as an individual.

The tournament continues Monday and concludes Tuesday at the Makai Golf Club.
