WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's basketball team played a strong second half to post an 81-75 victory over UNCG at the LJVM Coliseum Friday evening.
The Demon Deacons (2-4) improve to 11-0 in the all-time series with the Spartans (4-2), including an 8-0 advantage in Winston-Salem. The victory also snaps a four-game winning streak for UNCG.
The Deacs shot over 50 percent from the field for the first time this season, finishing with a 62 percent mark, the team's highest since shooting 61 percent against Notre Dame in the 2014 ACC Tournament. The Deacons also shot 57 percent from beyond the 3-point arc for the game, their highest percentage since shooting 62 percent against UTEP in 2016.
Entering the second half with a six-point advantage, the Deacons went 13-for-19 from the field after the break, including going 5-for-6 from beyond the arc, en route to the 81-75 victory.
The Deacons held a 12-point lead with just under 12 minutes to go, but could not shake the Spartans as UNCG slowly chipped away at that lead, bringing the score within three with under five minutes to play. Up three with 36 seconds to go, Doral Moore knocked down two free throws to put the Deacs up by five. UNCG quickly countered, giving the Deacs a three-point lead with 15 seconds to go. Chaundee Brown and Brandon Childress each knocked down a pair of free throws to put the game out of the Spartans' reach and give the Deacs an 81-75 victory.
Earlier in the night, the teams battled through the opening minutes of the first half, but Wake Forest used a 7-0 run to take a nine-point lead with just under 11 minutes to go and force the Spartans into a timeout. UNCG used a short 7-0 run of its own to bring the score within two, but a dunk from Moore stopped the run and maintained the Deacs' lead. Wake Forest continued to roll through the first half, taking a 36-30 lead into halftime.
Keyshawn Woods led the Demon Deacons offensively with 20 points while Moore matched his season-high with 17 points.
Bryant Crawford also recorded double-digits with 11 points while Donovan Mitchell recorded a career-high 10 points in just eight minutes. Mitchell went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, with six points coming from behind the arc, while going 2-for-2 at the charity stripe.
Up next, the Demon Deacons will continue their three-game homestand on Nov. 28 by hosting Illinois in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tip is set for 9 p.m. and can be seen on ESPNU.
