WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest head football coach Dave Clawson today announced the addition of Brad Sherrod to the Demon Deacons' defensive coaching staff. Sherrod joins Wake Forest after serving as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Sam Houston State in 2016.
Sherrod helped the Bearkats post a 12-1 record last fall and reach No. 1 in the Football Championship Subdivision final regular season poll. Sam Houston State lost to eventual national champion James Madison in the quarterfinal round of the FCS playoffs.
"Brad is very familiar with the ACC from his time as both a player and coach at Duke," said Clawson. "His experience in coaching linebackers as well as being a defensive coordinator will be a great asset to our staff. With every member of the defensive staff having coordinator experience, I am confident that our defense is in good hands."
A member of the Sam Houston State coaching staff since 2014, the Bearkats went 34-10 over the last three years and gained three FCS playoff berths. His career has landed him on coaching staffs at Massachusetts, East Tennessee State, Elon and Delaware along with his alma mater, Duke.
A 1993 graduate of Duke, Sherrod was a team captain who earned second team All-ACC honors as a senior in 1993 when he led the Blue Devils and ranked fifth in the ACC with 113 total tackles. A native of Monroe, N.C., Sherrod had 279 career stops during his career from 1989-93.
As a prep, Sherrod was a two-time all-state and honorable mention All-America pick at Monroe, N.C. High School.
Clawson also announced the defensive coaching positions. Defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel will work with the cornerbacks, Lyle Hemphill will work directly with the safeties and Sherrod will coach the linebackers. In addition, defensive line coach Dave Cohen has been named as the Defensive Run Game Coordinator.
Taylor Redd, a graduate assistant coach working with the Deacon offense, has been elevated to Director of Recruiting. Redd, a 2013 graduate of Bowling Green, has worked with Clawson and his staff since 2010. He will replace Warren Belin who has left the staff in order to pursue other opportunities.
