WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Despite double-digit scoring efforts from Amber Campbell and Elisa Penna, Wake Forest fell to No. 13/14 Duke 79-53 Thursday night inside the LJVM Coliseum.
Campbell and Penna each finished with 11 points to lead the Deacs while Alex Sharp and Ariel Stephenson added eight each. Quinn led the rebounding efforts with seven boards.
The Blue Devils (23-4, 11-3 ACC) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over the Deacs (14-12, 5-8 ACC), but Penna hit a triple and jumper on back-to-back possessions to tie up the score 11-all with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Duke, however, hit a jumper as time expired to take a slim 13-11 lead into the second quarter.
The Blue Devils worked their way up to a 7-point advantage with 6:21 remaining in the half to force the Deacs into a timeout. The Deacs finished the half on a 6-0 run to cut the Blue Devils lead to 30-23 heading into halftime. Three layups, two by Campbell and one by Penna, sparked the run.
The Blue Devils opened the second half on a 7-0 run, which was too much for the Demon Deacons to overcome as they ultimately fell by a final score of 79-53.
Kelila Atkinson recorded a season-high three rebounds and her first block and assist of the year. Quinn tallied one block on the evening to move into sole possession of second place on Wake Forest's all-time blocks list with 110. Campbell's 11 points move the junior into 20th-place on the all-time scoring list.
The Deacs travel to Raleigh to take on NC State on Sunday, Feb. 19. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
