COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Wake Forest men's track and field sophomore Robert Heppenstall wrapped up the 2016-17 indoor season by placing fifth in the 800m dash final with a time of 1:47.98 at the 2017 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday evening at the Gilliam Stadium in College Station, Texas.
The outcome of the race was under a lengthy official review after excessive contact between runners during the race. Eventually, the results were confirmed and Heppenstall finished fifth.
With his fifth-place finish, Heppenstall earned First Team All-American honors for the second time in his career in the event after finishing fifth last season. The only other Demon Deacon All-American in the 800m was Warren Sherman, who earned the honor outdoors in 1995.
After qualifying for the final with a 1:47.96 showing on Friday in the preliminary round, Heppenstall posted a 1:47.98 time in the final. Emmanuel Korir of UTEP took the gold with a time of 1:47.48 after battling it out with Virginia Tech's Drew Piazza, who took second with a time of 1:47.62
The Demon Deacons now shift their focus to the outdoor season which begins March 17-18 at the Bill Webb Combined Events and Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off hosted by High Point University.
