Wake Forest Wraps Up First Outdoor Competition

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams wrapped up their first weekend in the outdoor season at the Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off Saturday on the campus of High Point University.

The Demon Deacons claimed three event titles and 11 top-five finishes in the second day of competition. On the track, Jen Esposito took home the event title in the women's 400m Hurdles while in the field, Charlie Ionata claimed the men's Hammer Throw gold and Max Adams took the Discus.

Yesterday, Amy Collins took the heptathlon event title with a score of 4716 while Alexander Giacco took first in the men's 1500m with a personal best time of 3:55.95. The Demon Deacons finished the day with nine personal bests and 10 top-five finishes.

Charlie Ionata and Kyle Johnson kicked off Saturday's competition in the men's Weight Throw with first and fourth place finishes. Ionata threw 64.34m on his first throw, enough to take first place going into finals, while Johnson's best throw of 57.08m came on his second attempt, which was good for third entering finals. In the finals, Ionata held on to his first-place throw while Johnson was bumped back to fourth place.

Alva Hicks took second in the women's Hammer Throw with a best mark of 57.61m, nearly four meters (fifteen feet), further than the third-place mark and a new school record replacing the 57.20m mark she threw last season. Jessica Molina took 10th in the event with a mark of 49.67m and Andrea Vahoua finished 16th at 46.37m.

Max Adams finished first in the men's discus after entering finals in second. Adams threw 53.14m on his fourth throw to claim the title. On the women's side, Casidy Howard finished runner-up in the event with a top throw of 47.33m while Alva Hicks placed sixth overall with a mark of 43.23m.

The men's 4x100m Relay team consisting of Kaleb Bryant, Jalen Latter, John Armstrong and Josh Okonye took fifth place with a time of 42.69.

In the men's 800m, John Archie took fifth in his heat and fifth overall with a time of 1:55.29, just a second shy of a personal best. Dakota Greenwalt finished first in his heat while a time of 1:57.42, which was good for 11th overall while Nick Beglane wrapped up the event with a second-place finish in his heat and 12th overall with a time of 1:57.98.

In her first outdoor meet for the Demon Deacons, Jennifer Esposito claimed the 400m Hurdles event title with a time of 59.35, nearly two seconds faster than the second-place time. Emma Gallagher, also competing in her first outdoor meet for the Deacs, finished in seventh with a time of 1:03.72

In the men's 400m Hurdles, Bobby Jacowleff finished 13th with a time of 56.84.

The Deacs closed out the competition in the 4x400m Relays. The women's team consisting of Maya Hinton, Emma Gallagher, Sarah Johnson and Emma Esposito took fifth with a time of 3:53.41 while the men's team of John Archie, Kaleb Bryant, Dakota Greenwalt and Nick Beglane also took fifth with a time of 3:21.09

Tesia Kempski matched a personal best and set an outdoor career best in the pole vault after clearing the 3.80m bar, a height she set in the indoor season. Madison Bragg placed 10th after clearing the 3.20m bar.

Next up, the Demon Deacons head to NC State in Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays held March 24-25.
