PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – The Wake Forest women's golf team opened play Thursday at the 2017 ACC Championship with the first round at The Reserve Golf Club. A pair of Demon Deacons are in the individual top 10 after the opening 18 holes, while the team is in 12th place.
Sierra Sims shot a 3-under first round 69 to end the day tied for third place, one shot off the lead. Jennifer Kupcho is tied for sixth place after shooting a 2-under 70.
"Sierra and Jennifer played two terrific rounds today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "They worked hard yesterday in the practice round to learn this course and that paid off today. They were both in contention for the title last year and have put themselves in position again this year."
As a team, the Demon Deacons shot 24-over during the first round. Erica Herr had a first round 82. A pair of walk-ons rounded out the lineup as the team was missing several starters due to injuries. Monica Schumacher, who joined the team earlier this week, shot 91 in her collegiate debut, while Anna Wears posted a first round 92 in her first ACC Championship appearance.
"I was proud of how the team hung in there today," said Dailey. "We are short-handed and everyone had to play through some adversity. It wasn't easy, but they are out there playing for their teammates and I am proud of them for doing that."
The tournament continues Friday and concludes Saturday at The Reserve Golf Club.
