ATHENS, Ga. – The Wake Forest women's golf team opened play Monday at the NCAA Athens Regional with first round play the University of Georgia Golf Course. Sophomore Jennifer Kupcho shot a 4-under 68 to hold the individual lead after 18 holes.

Kupcho had seven birdies during her first round as she posted her school-record 10th consecutive round under par. At 4-under, she is the tournament's first round leader by one shot.

"I was hitting the ball really well and my putter was on fire," said Kupcho. "On this course it is important to just hit fairways and greens and that was what I tried to do today."

As a team, the Demon Deacons shot 20-over during the first round and are in 15th place. The top six teams and three highest individuals from teams not advancing will qualify for the NCAA Championships, held later this month in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Sierra Sims posted a first round 77, Antonia Eberhard had an 81, Erica Herr had an 82 and Anna Wears shot an 88 to round out the Demon Deacon lineup.

"Jennifer played terrifically today, especially to have seven birdies on this course," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "She made some very good scrambling pars coming in to shoot 4-under. We are excited for her and hopefully our team can make a little bit of a comeback tomorrow."

The NCAA Athens Regional continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
