Redshirt freshman Greg Dortch sat down following the Demon Deacons' sixth practice of fall camp to talk about what he learned during his redshirt season and what he hopes to accomplish during the 2017 campaign.
What was it like sitting out all of last season as a redshirt?
It was really tough at first, but I trusted the process and now that I can play I feel like that one year off really helped me. I got stronger, I got faster, I learned the playbook a little bit more and now I feel like I am right there with everybody else.
What do you hope to contribute to the team this year?
Hopefully I can be a big playmaker on special teams, kick return and punt return, and do my part on the offensive side of the ball.
What is like battling the other wide receivers in practice each day?
It's not really a battle. Me and Tabari (Hines) are like brothers so we just try to compete every day and go out and make each other better. Tabari has done a great job with me; he's been patient. My redshirt freshman year I asked him about a couple of plays and he would sit me down and talk to me about it and he's just been a good brother to me.
What do you think you are better at now than when you first got to campus?
I'm faster at learning the plays and have everything down pat.
Coaches talk about "every play" as well as putting in the extra time to be successful. What does that mean to you?
I just have to continue to play hard every play and by the end of this camp I'll be right where I want to be. We have the best strength and conditioning coaches ever. Coach (Brandon) Hourigan is a great guy. Coming in here on Saturday and Sunday and just putting in work on my own time with Coach Hourigan and Coach Chad (Bari) and the rest of the staff has done a great job with us.
