WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team upset No. 3 South Carolina, 3-2, in the 2017 season home-opener Thursday night.
The victory was the first over a top-five opponent since topping No. 4 Boston College on Sept. 20, 2012. Specifically, it was the first upset over a No. 3 ranked opponent since Nov. 4, 2011 when the Deacs defeated Duke, 2-1. The Demon Deacons would continue to their first-ever College Cup.
Maddie Huster, Bayley Feist and Hannah Betfort tallied the goals for the Demon Deacons (3-0-0).
Betfort scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute with assists from Sarah Medina and Vicky Krug. Betfort, a freshman, leads the team with three goals this season.
Huster opened the scoring for both teams with penalty kick in the 3rd minute for her second goal of the season. However, South Carolina (2-1-0) quickly responded with an equalizer in the 5th minute when Savannah McCaskill shot from 25-yards out. McCaskill would then double South Carolina's score in the 24th minute to give the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead at the break.
After trailing at halftime, the Deacs scored back-to-back second half goals to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Feist scored her first goal of the season and tied the game 2-all in the 51st minute with a header off a corner kick taken by Huster. Betfort then scored the final goal in the 62nd minute.
Lindsay Preston played all 90 minutes in goal for the Deacs, picking up her third win of the season. She finished with three saves.
South Carolina outshout Wake Forest 9-6, but the Demon Deacons held a 5-3 advantage in the second half. Medina and Betfort led the old gold and black with two shots each.
Wake Forest also held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, the Demon Deacons will face the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 27. Kickoff in Spry Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
