DURHAM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team began the 2017-18 season with a strong opening day at the Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke University Golf Club. The Demon Deacons finished the first 36 holes of the event at 18-under and enter Sunday's final round with a six-shot lead.

Wake Forest, looking to win the Rod Myers Invitational for the third consecutive year, shot a 6-under 282 in the first round before a 12-under 276 in the second round. Oregon is in second at 12-under through two rounds while Vanderbilt is third at 11-under and host Duke is at 8-under.

Will Zalatoris is in second place on the individual leaderboard at 8-under, shooting a first-round 69 and a second-round 67. He is three strokes behind the individual leader, Norman Xiong of Oregon.

Cameron Young is T-10th after Saturday's play at 3-under, shooting rounds of 69 and 72. Paul McBride is T-16th at 2-under, rebounding from a first-round 76 with a second-round 66, the lowest round of the day for the Deacs. Eric Bae is also under par at 1-under after rounds of 72 and 71.

Three Demon Deacons made their collegiate debut on Saturday. Freshman Marco Steyn rounded out the lineup for Wake Forest with rounds of 72 and 78 to finish the day at 6-over. Fellow freshman Parker Gillam, playing as an individual, is at 4-over, while redshirt freshman Charlie Kennerly finished at 5-over as an individual.

"It was a very solid day from all five guys," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Will was very good over 36 holes and is in contention. Cameron and Eric had solid rounds and we got a great round in the afternoon from Paul after a good debut from Marco in the morning. We have three great teams chasing us tomorrow so we will need all five guys playing well."

The tournament will conclude Sunday at the Duke University Golf Club with the third round.
