WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 4-ranked Wake Forest took advantage of a pair of second-half goals to take down Pittsburgh, 2-0, at Spry Stadium on Saturday night.
The Demon Deacons (6-1-0, 2-0-0) earned the win to cap off a Homecoming Weekend in which the team honored the 2007 National Championship squad, and welcomed back more than 80 alumni in total.
After the game was scoreless headed into halftime, Steven Echevarria notched the game-winner in the 64th minute, heading in a Brandon Servania corner. The goal was the first of the season for Echevarria, as well as Servania's seventh assist.
Ema Twumasi added his fourth goal of the past three games in the 85th minute. A loose ball after a free kick was tapped by Jon Bakero to Twumasi, who beat the keeper for his fourth goal of the season. Bakero once again tied Servania for the team lead in assists with his seventh.
Andreu Cases Mundet earned his second-straight shutout as the back line posted another strong effort, allowing just three shots compared to Wake Forest's 21.
Pitt (2-4-0, 0-2-0 ACC) keeper Mikal Outcalt took the loss despite making 10 saves.
Wake Forest welcomed back longtime head coach Jay Vidovich in the pregame ceremony, as he was at the helm of the 2007 National Championship squad and totaled more than 270 wins at Wake Forest.
