BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wake Forest men's golf team captured its second title of the season, winning the 2017 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate. The Demon Deacons shot 6-under during Tuesday's final round at the Shoal Creek Golf Club to finish the event at 15-under and post a 13-shot victory over runner-up Liberty.
With the championship, the Demon Deacons have started a season with consecutive victories for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The 13-shot margin of victory was the team's largest in three seasons.
Three Demon Deacons finished in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard. Paul McBride shot a final round 3-under 69 to earn runner-up honors at 8-under. Cameron Young had a final round 70 to finish fifth at 5-under, his second straight top-five finish. Eric Bae posted his third career top-10 finish, shooting 71 on Tuesday to finish T-9th at 2-under.
Marco Steyn was the fourth Demon Deacon score to count on Tuesday, shooting even par 72 to finish the event at 6-over. Will Zalatoris had a final round 74 to finish the tournament at 2-over.
"It's always nice to have the lead and then go out and shoot the low round of the day," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We got great contributions from everyone this week. Paul played very solid golf all three rounds and Cameron had another top-five. Eric was 2-under for the week, Will hung in there and Marco had a couple of rounds count. We still have a lot of work to do but it has been a wonderful start to the year. Now we have to get ready to go to Oregon to compete against a great field. There will be some cold, rainy weather, so we need to be prepared."
Wake Forest will return to action Oct. 1-3 for the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course in Oregon, annually featuring one of the strongest fields of the year. The Demon Deacons won the event two years ago, the last time it was played at Pumpkin Ridge.
