WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest's Greg Dortch on Monday (Dec. 10) was named a first team All-America at punt returner by the Football Writers Association of America. In addition, Dortch earned second team All-America honors from The Associated Press. Dortch was selected to the AP team as an all-purpose player.
Dortch, a 5-9, 170-pound redshirt sophomore from Richmond, Va. (Highland Springs), is the first Deacon to earn first team All-America honors from the FWAA since cornerback Alphonso Smith in 2008. Dortch becomes the first Wake Forest player since linebacker Aaron Curry in 2008 to earn second team AP All-America honors.
Dortch leads the ACC in all-purpose yards with 145.8. He compiled 1,750 all-purpose yards in 12 games including 1,078 receiving yards. Dortch leads the ACC in punt return average at 11.0 yards per return. He ranks second in the ACC with 7.4 receptions per game, third in receiving yards per game at 89.8, and eighth in scoring.
Nationally, Dortch was the only player in the country with two punt returns for a touchdown in a game in 2018. He had returns of 60 and 70 yards for touchdowns in a win over Towson on Sept. 8. Dortch is seventh in the country in receptions per game, 11th in all-purpose yards, 13th in punt return average, and 16th in combined kick return yards.
Dortch has caught 89 passes for 1,078 yards and eight touchdowns. He has returned 25 punts for 276 yards and two touchdowns while fielding 18 kickoffs for 376 yards, a 20.9 average.
Along with the FWAA and Associated Press recognition, Dortch has been named the first team All-American return specialist by Sports Illustrated. He was also a first team All-American at punt returner by Pro Football Focus and second team returner and all-purpose player by The Athletic.
