WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest's athletic program is No. 2 in the nation following today's release of the Learfield Director's Cup. Stanford is No. 1 in the nation as of Dec. 13, having earned 396 points. Wake Forest is second with 266 points.
Wake Forest leads all ACC teams in the Director's Cup, ranking ahead of second-place NC State which earned 243 points.
"I am very proud of the accomplishments of all of our fall sports teams," said Ron Wellman, Wake Forest athletic director. "It is testament to the hard work and dedication of our coaches and student-athletes. We are excited to be ranked first in the ACC and second in the nation and will look forward to seeing our winter and spring teams have great success as well."
The Demon Deacons were 10th in the nation on Nov. 29 in the first release of the year. Wake Forest earned 83 points through field hockey's trip to the national semifinals, 28 points in women's cross country and 27 points in men's cross country.
The second Director's Cup release of the fall includes men's and women's soccer. Each of Wake Forest's soccer teams reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament and each team earned 64 points.
The only other fall sport yet to be calculated in to Director's Cup standings is football. Wake Forest has earned 25 points for earning a bowl invitation. A victory in a bowl game would be worth an additional 20 points for the Demon Deacons. Those points will be included in the final fall release which will be available following the Jan. 7 College Football Playoff championship.
Wake Forest's 266 points is the most that it has earned in the fall since the 2008-09 season when it registered 268 points and ranked fifth after the fall. Wake Forest's highest year-end finish was 23rd in 2006-07.
The Director's Cup will issue its third fall update on Dec. 20 and the final fall results will be available on Jan. 10.
