Heppenstall Qualifies for NCAA 800m Final

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Wake Forest men's track and field junior Robert Heppenstall qualified for the men's 800m finals at the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday night.
Heppenstall finished second in his heat with a time of 1:47.74 to automatically qualify for the eight-man final on Saturday. The top three runners in the two heats and the next two fastest times moved on.
This will be Heppenstall's third trip to the indoor finals in his career, finishing fifth overall both his freshman and sophomore season.
The automatic qualifiers on Friday were Daniel Kuhn of Indiana, Abraham Alvarado of BYU, Isaiah Harris of Penn State, John Lewis of Clemson and Bryce Hoppel of Kansas. UTEP's Michael Saruni and Mississippi State's Dejon Devroe qualified based on times. Kuhn paced all runners with a time of 1:47.48 while Kuhn, Harris and Saruni will return to the finals for the second consecutive season with Heppenstall.
Saturday's 800m final is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. (EST). ESPN3 will stream the finals live beginning at 5 p.m.
