Justin McMaster scored twice and Bruno Lapa added a goal and two assists in the 4-2 victory.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 5-ranked Wake Forest scored less than five minutes into the game and led from start to finish in a 4-2 win over ETSU at Spry Stadium on Sunday night.
Justin McMaster and Bruno Lapa totaled four points apiece to lead the potent Demon Deacon (2-0-0) offense, as Wake Forest jumped out to a 3-0 lead and played a total of 21 players.
"We scored four, and I think if you ask the attacking group, we should have put the game away earlier," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I think we could've done a lot better job in our finishing and really killing the game off. I'm really proud of the way our guys responded from a really tough emotional and physical game on Friday. We pushed the tempo of the game and imposed ourselves."
McMaster found the back of the net at the 4:51 mark, after a long ball from Logan Gdula got him behind the defense. McMaster beat the keeper from close range to put the Deacs up, 1-0.
Aristotle Zarris scored his first collegiate goal just three minutes after entering as a substitute. Lapa recorded his first of two assists, finding Zarris at the top of the box for the finish to make it 2-0 in the 27th minute.
After Zarris was taken down in the box in the 63rd minute, Lapa perfectly executed a PK for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
ETSU (0-2-0), the defending SoCon champions, got on the board in the 80th minute when Luke Parker put away a cross from Austin Bihlmeyer to cut the margin to 3-1.
But McMaster scored again to put the game away for Wake Forest two minutes later off assists from Isaiah Parente and Lapa.
Danny Barlow added a goal for the Buccaneers with less than two minutes remaining.
"The mentality needs to be better. We need to kill that game off and not concede goals," Muuss said. "We didn't let up a shot for a long period of time and next thing you know we're up against it. We have strong defensive goals in this program, and although we're 2-0 and got a good win against a team that I think will win a lot of games, we're not happy with conceding goals tonight the way we did."
The Deacs had a 16-7 advantage in shots, led by five from Omir Fernandez, three of which were saved by ETSU keeper Josh Perryman.
