The Demon Deacons open the season Friday at the Charlotte Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Thursday (Aug. 30) the 2018 ACC Cross Country Preseason Poll, as voted upon by the league's head coaches. The Wake Forest women were projected to finish sixth, while the Demon Deacon men were selected seventh.

The finishes are the highest Wake Forest has been selected since the inception of the poll in 2015. Last season, the women were chosen seventh while the men were predicted to finish 10th.

The women are coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2017 ACC Championships, the best team finish since they took third in 2008, while the men finished sixth, their highest finish since 2010.  The team returns 2017 ACC Freshman of the Year Mitchell Day and All-ACC honoree Samantha Halvorsen this season. Halvorsen went on to earn All-Region honors at the NCAA Southeast Regional where the women finished sixth and the men 11th.

This year's ACC Championships will be held Oct. 26 at Franklin Park in Boston.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) also released its Regional Cross Country Rankings this week. The women were selected to finish fifth while the men were selected to finish 10th, marking the second-consecutive season both teams were in the preseason rankings.

The Demon Deacons open the season this Friday (Aug. 31) at the Charlotte Opener.
