WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest wide receiver and kick return specialist Greg Dortch on Monday was named the ACC Specialist of the Week.
Dortch, a 5-9, 170-pound redshirt sophomore from Richmond, Va. (Highland Springs) posted the most all-purpose yards of any player in the nation on Saturday with 310. He had seven receptions for 94 yards including a touchdown, had three kickoff returns for 85 yards (long of 38), and three punt returns for 131 yards (long of 70). Dortch returned two punts for touchdowns, coming on returns of 70 and 60 yards and added a touchdown reception. He became the first Wake Forest player with two punt return touchdowns since 1927.
Dortch first caught a seven-yard scoring pass from quarterback Sam Hartman with 7:11 left in the first quarter to give the Demon Deacons a 14-7 lead over Towson.
In the third quarter, he returned a punt 70 yards for a score and a 31-14 Wake Forest lead. Dortch followed that with a 60-yard punt return with 2:02 to play in the third quarter that put the Deacons up 38-14.
Dortch became just the fourth player in ACC history with two punt returns for touchdowns in the same game. In addition, he became the first Wake Forest player in school history with four consecutive 200-yard all-purpose yardage games.
Dortch matched the school record of two punt returns for touchdowns in the same game that was set by Johnny Cox in a 13-13 tie with Davidson in 1927. Ironically, Cox had returns of 60 and 70 yards as well and both came in the same quarter.
