WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest head football coach Dave Clawson today (Sept. 23) announced that defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel has been relieved of his duties.
"This was a difficult decision and not a spur of the moment decision," said Clawson. "I want to thank Coach Sawvel for all his hard work with our football program over the last two years. Coach Sawvel is a very good person and a good football coach."
Tom Gilmore, currently a defensive analyst, will be elevated from his current assignment to a full-time coaching position where he will work with Wake Forest's outside linebackers.
Other defensive duties will be split among the defensive staff with specific roles yet to be determined.
Gilmore is the former head coach at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. who joined the Wake Forest staff this summer. He was a star defensive lineman at the University of Pennsylvania who earned Ivy League Player of the Year honors and was an Academic All-American. Gilmore was a defensive assistant coach at Penn, Columbia and Dartmouth and served as the defensive coordinator at Lehigh before becoming the head coach at Holy Cross. He spent 14 years leading the Crusaders and captured the 2009 Patriot League Championship. Gilmore is the second-winningest football coach in Holy Cross history and twice was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year.
All other defensive coaches will retain their position responsibilities including Dave Cohen (defensive line), Brad Sherrod (inside linebackers), Lyle Hemphill (safeties), and Ryan Crawford (cornerbacks).
Wake Forest hosts Rice on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m. at BB&T Field.
