Fernandez Signs Homegrown Deal with Red Bulls

Wake Forest sophomore Omir Fernandez will begin his pro career in the MLS.
HARRISON, N.J. -- Wake Forest sophomore Omir Fernandez signed a homegrown contract with the New York Red Bulls and will begin his pro career, the organization announced Saturday.
Fernandez was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2018 after totaling 12 goals and six assists, tying for the league lead with 30 points.
The consensus first team All-American finishes his Wake Forest career with 47 points on 18 goals and 11 assists.
He becomes the fourth Deacon to head to the MLS this offseason, joining draftees Logan Gdula (FC Cincinnati) and Brad Dunwell (Houston Dynamo), and homegrown signee Sam Raben (Colorado Rapids).
In two seasons with Red Bulls Academy before coming to Wake Forest, Fernandez recorded 42 goals in 56 games.
"We have followed Omir closely and are pleased to add him to the First Team," Red Bulls Head Coach Chris Armas said in a release. "He is a talented player and also a humble person with high character. He understands our style of play and also attacks with creativity and intelligence."
