Postgame Quotes
Louisville 62, Wake Forest 59 – October 12, 2019
Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Clawson
Opening Statement:
"We went into this game saying that the three things we couldn't do was turn the football over, not let the ball get over our heads and we could not allow explosive plays. We didn't accomplish any of those things"
On special teams:
"Our special teams were atrocious tonight. We got to the point where we had to sky kick it, we didn't even trust ourselves to cover it. So we're just handing them the ball at the 35 yard line, even that we didn't do right"
On focus:
"All year, I think we've been a focused, disciplined football team and tonight we were not. Our focus coming into the game was awful. "We had two weeks to get ready for this game, we had two weeks to prepare for it. We knew they were good. We knew they were improved. We knew they were explosive and we just showed up and laid a dud in the first quarter"
Wake Forest redshirt sophomore wide receiver Sage Surratt
On the loss:
"[There was] no doubt that this team has fight...we shouldn't have been in the position [at the end of the game] anyway. There were a lot of bad plays on our part...we just made some costly mistakes early on in the game."
On Louisville's defense:
"They had a good game plan. We didn't execute what we needed to. There were some drives we should have converted."
On being down 28-7 early on in the game:
"Some things in practice we messed up on. Everyone has to be ready for the game at all times."
Wake Forest redshirt senior linebacker Justin Strnad
On being down 28-7 early on in the game:
"We didn't start the way we needed to. We talked about starting fast, not turning the ball over, obviously, and special teams...we didn't show up [in those areas] to win an ACC football game. It took too long to lock in and the game got sloppy really quick."
On not making progress in the bye week:
"In this league if you don't show up to play, no matter who you are playing against, you will lose...we turned the ball over on offense and didn't play well enough defensively to win this game."
On taking things for granted:
"We come to work every single day…we were 5-0 going into this game. You don't go to a bowl game for being 5-0, that's not accomplishing anything...we will be ready to answer the bell next week."
On the Sam Hartman:
"We believe in Sam [Hartman] just as much as Jamie [Newman]. I thought [Sam] did a great job of relieving Jamie tonight and who knows what Jamie's health is like, so Sam has done his job to be prepared every weekend. Tonight his number was called."
Louisville Head Coach Scott Satterfield
Opening Statement:
"We know that's a big win. Wake Forest, number one, is a really good football team. I got a lot of respect for Coach Clawson and his staff and what they do and how they do it. They do it the right way. They got some really good players. Watching film, those two receivers, I'm thinking they're good and then watching in person I'm like they're really good. The quarterback does a really good job of getting rid of the ball, both of their quarterbacks did. I tip my hat off to those guys. They just kept fighting, kept coming back in the game but I'm really proud of our guys to come in here. We had a lot of momentum after the BC win last week and we knew this was going to be a tough challenge, they had a week off and work on a lot of things they could do to work on us and stop us, but our guys made a lot of plays, particularly special teams early in the game. That was awesome what we did special teams-wise. We had a couple of big returns by Hassan Hall. What really won the game for us was getting a couple of scores. We were able to maintain that pretty much the whole game until right there at the very end. We know how powerful their offense is."
On the win compared to others:
"It's a team that was ranked 19th and 17th in the Coaches Poll. It's a team that was 5-0, a really hot team, very good offense and to come out here and for our guys to fight the way they did, I'm extremely proud of them. Nobody thought we were going to play hard this year, but we've been able to do that. We've been able to play hard. I think if you asked anybody after six games what Louisville would be, if they would be 4-2, they probably would have laughed at you but we believed, our guys believed and that's kind of who we are and now we're at the mid-point of the season and what teams are made of is how we finish seasons so that's all we talk about, how we're going to finish the second half of the ACC season."
On Evan Conley:
"Evan's a calm customer. He's just really even-keeled and he plays his heart out. He's very cerebral. He studies film like crazy. He's talented, too. He's got a good arm, he can run. He showed that on the fourth down play there at the end where we got a touchdown. He had a couple plays he'd like to have back. He'll learn from those like the interception that got run back 30 to 40 yards and the 2-2 ball at the end that could have been another touchdown, but I love making corrections after wins so we can come back and make those corrections."
