No. 4 Wake Forest Storms Past William & Mary, 5-0

10/15/2019 9:35:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Kyle Holcomb scored twice to lead the Demon Deacons to the victory.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 4 Wake Forest was dominant from start to finish in a 5-0 victory over William & Mary at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Demon Deacons (11-2-0) scored three times in the first half and twice more in the second half to take down the Tribe (4-6-2).

Kyle Holcomb recorded his first career multi-goal game, giving him four goals over the last three matches.

"I think from start to finish, it was maybe our best overall team performance of the season," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "It was an overall good team win. This week in training, it was intense between our starters and reserves. It paid off, a lot of young guys came on and made a really big difference with the energy and football they brought."

A total of 24 Deacons saw the field Tuesday, the most this season.

Bruno Lapa started the scoring with a penalty kick in the 22nd minute for what proved to be the game-winner.

Aristotle Zarris assisted on the next two goals, first finding Calvin Harris on the left side of the box for a one-timer off the through ball to make the score 2-0 in the 26th minute.

Holcomb tallied his first goal of the night in the 36th minute, sneaking a shot inside the near post off another nifty through ball from Zarris.

The Deacs scored twice in the 73rd minute, just 28 seconds apart, marking the fifth-shortest time between goals in program history.

Nico Benalcazar found the back of the net at the 72:11 mark, finishing off an Omar Hernandez corner kick after a deflection from Isaiah Parente.

Holcomb closed out the scoring at the 72:39 mark, scoring on a volley off a cross from Lapa.

The Deacs held a 19-4 advantage in shots. Three of the Tribe's four attempts were on target and saved by Andrew Pannenberg, who combined with Dominic Peters for the shutout.

Wake Forest returns to action against No. 19 North Carolina on Friday night at 6 p.m. on ACC Network.
