WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest sophomore placekicker Nick Sciba on Tuesday was named one of three Stars of the Week by the Lou Groza Award.
Sciba, a 5-9, 190-pound sophomore from Clover, S.C., tied the school record with five field goals as Wake Forest defeated Florida State, 22-20, on Saturday. Sciba hit first quarter field goals from 21 and 25 yards and added second quarter field goals from 25 and 27 yards. In the fourth quarter, in a rainstorm delivering just under a quarter inch of rain per hour, he hit a 25-yard field goal with 4:18 remaining to push the Deacons ahead 22-20.
Sciba is a perfect 12 of 12 on field goals this season and has the nation's longest streak of consecutive field goals made at 23. After converting 19 of 22 attempts in 2018, he has become one of just four kickers in the nation who is perfect this year with 10 or more field goals.
College football's top kicking award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is presented by the Orange Bowl to the top Football Bowl Subdivision kicker in the nation. The award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954.
