WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Bob McCreary, a member of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame and former Demon Deacon football star, will represent Wake Forest as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Legends class that was announced on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The 14-member group of honorees includes McCreary as well as other ACC standouts such as Florida State's Ron Sellers, Miami's Bernie Kosar, and Syracuse's Joe Morris.
McCreary lettered three years from 1958-60 as an offensive and defensive lineman after becoming a starter on the 1957 freshman team. Despite coming off surgery on his leg, the Newton, N.C. native saw action at left tackle as a junior in 1958 and at right tackle in 1959. A fifth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 1961 NFL Draft, McCreary moved to Dallas where he became a starter for the Cowboys in 1961. He also spent a season with Calgary of the Canadian Football League.
After his playing career, McCreary founded McCreary Modern, a furniture company, in 1986. Bob has been a significant donor to Wake Forest including lead gifts for McCreary Football Field House, the Bob McCreary Video Board Honoring the Class of 1961 and McCreary Tower. His consistent support of student-athletes at Wake Forest have impacted thousands of Demon Deacons through the years.
"Bob epitomizes the power of athletics to change lives," said Wake Forest Director of Athletics John Currie. "His own journey, from humble beginnings, to Wake Forest thanks to a football scholarship, to the Dallas Cowboys, to building a remarkable business and creating hundreds of jobs in his home region, to a transformational philanthropist, is an inspirational story. His leadership and sacrificial generosity is providing a generation of young men and women a world-class student-athlete experience while ensuring that Wake Forest has the ability to compete for championships at the highest level of college athletics."
This year's class of ACC Legends will be honored during the ACC Night of Legends presented by the Charlotte Sports Foundation at the Charlotte Convention Center, on Friday, Dec. 6, and during the on-field pregame festivities at the 15th annual ACC Football Championship Game, set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium.
