WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Former Wake Forest soccer player, professional photographer and best-selling author Kate Parker has been selected to give the keynote address at the NCAA Field Hockey Championship banquet on Thursday night. Parker will also be recognized as the 'Open the Gate' honoree at Saturday's home football game against Duke.
Parker came to Wake Forest in 1994 as a freshman member of the inaugural women's soccer team and was the only student-athlete to play in every game of the team's first three seasons. In 1997, she graduated with a degree in communications after helping the Demon Deacons qualify for their first-ever NCAA Tournament.
Parker, a commercial and fine art photographer, went on to become a bestselling-author with her first book, Strong is the New Pretty, which celebrates, through photographs, the strength and spirit of girls being 100 percent themselves. The book was included in Amazon's Best Books of 2017 and has been featured on National Public Radio, in The Washington Post and The Huffington Post.
In April of 2019, Parker released The Heart of a Boy, a heartfelt message of self-confidence and warmth in over 200 compelling photographs and inspirational quotes from the boys themselves. Parker resides in Atlanta with her husband and two daughters.
Wake Forest will host the 2019 NCAA Field Hockey Championship, Nov. 22-24 at Kentner Stadium. Prior to the semifinal games on Friday, Parker will address the four teams in attendance, North Carolina, Boston College, Princeton and Virginia, at the NCAA Championship banquet held at Bridger Field House at BB&T Field. She will return to BB&T Field on Saturday to 'Open the Gate' as the Wake Forest football team takes the field to face Duke at 7:30 p.m.
