BB&T Field at 300: Here are some Remarkable Performances
11/21/2019 5:36:00 PM | Football, Les Johns
Wake Forest football will celebrate its 300th game at BB&T Field when Duke comes to visit at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in a vital ACC and Big Four clash.
Originally named Groves Stadium, Wake Forest began competing in BB&T Field at the start of the 1968 season, in the final season under coach Bill Tate. The facility took its current name prior to the start of the 2007 season.
Here's some BB&T superlatives:
Most wins over an opponent
The Deacs have a 14-7-1 record against Appalachian State at BB&T Field, and the 14 wins is the most for Wake Forest over any opponent at the venue. With the 44-10 victory earlier this season, the Deacs now have 13 victories over NC State and a win Saturday over the Blue Devils would bring that total to lucky 13 as well.
Wake Forest passing touchdowns by a player
John Wolford set this record in a 42-32 win over Louisville in 2017, but current starting quarterback Jamie Newman tied it with five touchdown throws in the 49-7 win over Elon earlier this season.
Most combined points
Wake Forest and Duke combined for 102 points in a 54-48 Demon Deacon win in 2010, which used to be the record until this season.
"Well, I hope we made it entertaining for everybody," then Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe said after the teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards of total offense.
Of course, this season's 62-59 Wake Forest loss to Louisville surpassed this record, as the two teams combined for 121 points in a game in which the Deacs scored four touchdowns in the final 6:19 to nearly come all the way back from a three-touchdown fourth-quarter deficit.
First win and top attendance
Games against North Carolina grab both of these superlatives. Freddie Summers fired a pair of deep touchdown passes in a 48-31 Wake Forest win over the Heels in the third game at BB&T Field in 1968 in front of 30,000 fans.
The most-attended game in BB&T Field history came against North Carolina in 2004, as 37,623 fans were there to see the Deacs fall 31-24, despite Chris Barclay's 138 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Rusty LaRue
Wake Forest quarterback Rusty LaRue owns a bevy of Wake Forest records at BB&T Field, largely for his performance against NC State in 1995. LaRue's effort in that contest remains the Wake Forest record at BB&T Field for most passing attempts (67), completions (50), passing yards (545) and total offense (554).
Fewest passing yards by opponent
Army actually completed zero passes in just three attempts in 1990 against the Deacs, as Wake Forest grabbed a 52-14 victory.
Rushing yards and touchdowns
Wake Forest rushed for 528 yards and seven touchdowns in 51-21 win over Tulsa in 1971. Leading runners for the Demon Deacons that season were Larry Hopkins (1,228), Larry Russell (803) and Ken Garrett (864). Russell was the starting quarterback on that run-heavy team and completed just 29 passes all season for 290 yards. That team still holds the record for most rushing yards in a season at Wake Forest with 3,344.
Touchdown receptions
Greg Dortch set this mark with four touchdown catches in a 42-32 win over Louisville in 2017, then tied it in a 56-24 victory over Rice a year later. Though Dortch played just two seasons before departing for the NFL Draft, he finished his career with 142 receptions — which is tied for ninth in program history.
