Wake Forest senior Bruno Lapa is just the second player in program history to twice be named first team All-American.
CARY, N.C. -- Wake Forest senior Bruno Lapa has repeated as a United Soccer Coaches first team All-American, the organization announced at the 2019 College Cup banquet on Thursday night.
Lapa becomes just the second Deacon to twice be named a first team All-American, joining goalkeeper William Hesmer in 2002 and 2003. Lapa is the 10th Deacon to be named a two-time All-American, regardless of first, second or third team.
"This is an incredible honor for Bruno. To do something that has happened so rarely in our program says a lot about his commitment to excel. He has matured on and off the field by leaps and bounds over his four years here and he's been a great captain this season," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "At the same time, awards like this are often a credit to team success and couldn't be possible without talent and hard work up and down our roster."
Lapa leads the team with 21 points on nine goals and three assists. He ranks in the top 20 in program history in career goals (22) and points (59), despite not starting a game his first two seasons.
He leads the ACC and ranks fourth in the country with six game-winning goals. Four of those came in consecutive games from Oct. 8-18 against High Point, NC State, William & Mary and North Carolina, and the last two came in the NCAA Championship second and third rounds against Maryland and Michigan, respectively. Lapa has scored 10 game-winners in his career, also notching four last year.
Lapa and the Deacs kick off play in the NCAA College Cup on Friday, taking on top-seeded Virginia at 8:30 p.m.
