No. 1 Virginia held off the Demon Deacons, 2-1, at the 2019 College Cup.

CARY, N.C. -- No. 4 Wake Forest mounted a second half rally, but No. 1 Virginia was able to hold on and edge the Deacs, 2-1, in the College Cup Semifinal at WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday night.

On a rainy night which impacted the playing surface, the Cavaliers (21-1-1) received a pair of first-half goals from Daryl Dike in the 19th and 23rd minutes.

The Demon Deacons (16-5-2) had advantages in shots (11-7), shots on goal (8-2), corner kicks (6-3) and possession (54-46), but were chasing a two-goal deficit much of the game. That margin was cut in half in the 79th minute, when Bruno Lapa stepped to the penalty spot and beat the keeper for his 10th goal of the season.

Wake Forest took seven shots in the second half, including a header from Machop Chol in the 89th minute which was stopped by a diving save from Colin Shutler, his seventh stop of the night.

"First off, congratulations to UVA and Georgetown on making the national final," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I commend my guys on the way they fought today. I thought they showed a lot. They never gave up and in the end were a little bit unlucky because I thought we pushed the game. I thought we were actually quite good."

Despite the constant rain, the stands were full with 9,862 fans, including thousands of Deacon fans.

"It was great. They were here early, and they were loud. I'm glad we got a goal to make a game of it," Muuss said. "The energy that brought was something special. It gave us hope. I've got to thank them all season long, we've had an incredible atmosphere at Spry."

The appearance was Wake Forest's sixth in a College Cup, all of those in the last 13 years.
