Childress Leads Deacons Over Notre Dame

Brandon Childress recorded 20 points in the win.

NOTRE DAME, IND. -   Wake Forest earned its first road win of the season, topping Notre Dame 75-68 on Tuesday night. Brandon Childress paced the Deacons with 20 points, a season-high eight assists and seven boards. Olivier Sarr tied a career-best with 14 points.
 
Wake Forest (10-15, 3-10 ACC) got off the a strong start, forcing a turnover on the opening possession. Sarr hit a jumper to open the scoring, the first time in eight games that the Deacs scored first. It didn't take long for Childress to find his place behind the arc hitting a three as Wake took a 5-0 lead.
 
Childress and Sarr remained hot pushing Wake's lead to 15-10. After missing the opening shot, the Deacs went 7-for-7 from the floor. The Irish were able to answer back on the other end, pulling within one prior to the first media timeout.
 
Notre Dame (13-13, 3-10 ACC) took its first lead of the game following a 7-0 run, but Torry Johnson tied the contest at 22- all with a triple at the 11:22 mark. Childress hit his third three, allowing the Deacons to regain the lead, 25-24.
 
The Irish took advantage of a nearly three minute scoring drought for Wake Forest, taking a 36-29 lead with 3:37 remaining in the first half. Brown hit a long two to cut the deficit to three with just over a minute on the clock and was fouled on the other end of the court with just one second remaining in the frame. He hit two-of-three from the charity stripe, but Notre Dame took a 36-35 lead into the locker room.
 
A jumper from Sarr out of the break gave Wake a one-point lead. Both teams traded baskets throughout the frame and, but Sharone Wright, Jr. got hot with a three to knot the game at 48, with 13:23 to play. Another three from Childress and a fast-break layup from Wright, Jr. put the Demon Deacons back on top 57-53 with 8:42 remaining.
 
Wright, Jr. continued the charge as he threw down a fast break dunk and Childress connected on another three, his fifth of the game, giving Wake Forest a 64-57 lead. Notre Dame responded with a 6-0 run to put the Irish within two with just under four minutes on the clock.
 
Sarr posted his career-high 14th point, giving the Deacons a 70-66 advantage with just 46 seconds left in the game. Notre Dame hit a pair from the line, pulling within three, but Johnson answered back with two free throws of his own for the 73-68 lead. A few more free throws from Childress sealed the 74-68 victory for the Deacs.
 
Wake Forest returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 24 at NC State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
