Deacons Fall to NC State in Road Contest

2/24/2019 8:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Jaylen Hoard led the Deacons with 17 points

RALEIGH, N.C. - Wake Forest men's basketball made the short trip to NC State on Sunday night, but the Wolfpack defeated the Deacons 94-74 to split the season series. Wake Forest took the first meeting of the year, 71-67 on Jan. 15.

Jaylen Hoard paced the Deacons with 17 points, while Childress added 15 and four assists. Sunday Okeke posted a career-high six points and Chaundee Brown tied a career-high with nine boards.

With Olivier Sarr out, Ikenna Smart made his first start since Wake Forest hosted the Wolfpack on Jan. 15.

The Pack jumped out to a 9-0 lead until Childress put the Deacs on the board with a corner three. Torry Johnson sparked a 6-0 run for the Deacons with a three and a layup to put Wake Forest within two at the 14:03 mark.

A three for Chaundee Brown put Wake Forest within one, 18-17 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half.

State regained command with an 8-0 run, pushing the lead to 26-17 and hit 3-of-4 down the stretch, including a three with under a minute to play in the first frame to take a 41-30 advantage. Hoard capped the half with a layup, as the Pack held on to a 41-32 lead at halftime.

Childress hit a three to open the second half scoring for the Deacs and Hoard followed with an And-1 as Wake pulled within six, 44-38. The Pack strung together a 10-0 run, taking a 56-41 forcing the Deacs to call a timeout.

After finding himself in early foul trouble, Hoard headed for the bench with 15 minutes to play in the second half. He returned and put up seven points within the final five and a half minutes of play, but eventually fouled out at the two-minute mark.

Sharone Wright, Jr. broke away with a fast break layup in the final minute of action, but State responded with a three to regain the 20-point lead. Aaron Spivey entered the game and hit the final shot for the Deacons, but the Wolfpack evened the series with the 94-74 victory.

The Deacons return to the LJVM for a two game home slate, hosting Miami on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at 7 p.m. and Syracuse on March 2 at noon.
